After four-and-a-half years at the Allianz Arena, Niklas Sule will see his contract expire in the summer.
Bayern Munich has been the club that poaches the best players from other German clubs. Things may be changing as players now seem ready to leave Bayern without a second thought. Last season, David Alaba rejected pressure to renew his contract with the Bavarians. The versatile Austrian defender ran down his contract and left as a free agent to join Real Madrid.
Another Bayern player seems to have taken the cue and refused to renew his contract at the club. Niklas Sule will be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season as a free agent. Speculations over the future of Sule were rife, but his next destination is known, with Borussia Dortmund claiming to have reached an agreement with the defender.
Sule off to Dortmund in the summer
After much speculation, confirmation has come that Niklas Sule will not be playing at the Allianz Arena next season. The Bayern Munich defender is confirmed to be joining another Bundesliga giant.
Borussia Dortmund has laid credence to the news of Niklas Sule joining the club on a free transfer in the summer. The German international has a contract that expires at the end of the season.
Sule will join the Marco Rose tutored side in June after spending over four years at the Allianz Arena. The 26-year-old joined Bayern Munich in 2017 from Hoffenheim after both sides agreed on an £18 million deal for the defender.
It has been a fruitful spell for Sule with the Bavarians. In the time he spent in Munich, Sule won four Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokals and the Champions League.
Sule could negotiate with different clubs as a free agent in January. The defender failed to reach an agreement with the Bundesliga leaders over an extension and decided to seek greener pastures.
Chelsea, Newcastle lose out
Two Premier League sides showed interest in signing Sule. Chelsea, Newcastle United and Barcelona were in the frame to land the German defender.
Chelsea face defensive challenges as the London club may lose three of their best defenders on a free transfer in the summer.
Borussia Dortmund have beaten the three sides to the punch by agreeing on contract terms with the player ahead of the 2022-23 season. Reports suggest that Dortmund has sealed a four-year deal with Sule. As per the club’s website, sportingctor Michael Zorc confirmed the reports putting to bed every link to the German defender by Chelsea and Newcastle.
Chelsea are looking to replace Rudiger, Azpilicueta and Christensen, who has refused to pen a contract extension with the Blues. Sule would have made a solid investment for the Champions League winners.
The German has 37 international caps and was part of the team that won the Confederations Cup in 2017.
