Reports suggest that the German international has decided on his next club.
Chelsea are in the middle of a mini defensive crisis. The London club are not suffering injuries to its defenders, but the situation at the club could see them lose as many as three senior defenders in the summer.
Thomas Tuchel is a worried man but has decided to focus on what he has as the club tries to fix the situation. The Blues are scouring the market for dependable defenders should they lose any of their players this summer.
Chelsea were in hot pursuit of Jules Kounde but came up short, with the figures Sevilla demanded too steep for the Blues. With Rudiger, Christensen and Azpilicueta in the final six months of their contracts, Chelsea will have to up their offer for the trio or come up good in the transfer market.
Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule has caught the eye of Chelsea administrators, with the German international looking to leave the Bundesliga giants in the summer on a free transfer.
Sule linked to Chelsea
After five years at Bayern Munich, Niklas Sule is about to call time on his spell at the Bundesliga club. Sule, who joined Bayern from 1899 Hoffenheim in 2017, is in the final six months of his contract. According to his agent, Sule has already decided on his next club.
Reports suggest that Sule is unlikely to sign an extension at Bayern amid links to London giants Chelsea.
Sule is not the only player linked to Chelsea, but his profile and contract status looks too attractive to ignore and will have other clubs eyeing the defender. Sule remains an option for several clubs when the transfer window reopens.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that the 26-year-old has made his mind up and will leave Bayern Munich as a free agent in the summer.
Chelsea have other defenders on their radar
Chelsea are in a spot with some of their defenders looking to run down their contracts. With three of their most experienced defenders set to leave when their contract expires in the summer, the London club will be light defensively and need to make forays into the market for replacements.
The contracts of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta will run out in the summer unless they renew their contracts before then.
Efforts to get Rudiger to agree to a new deal have met a brick wall as the club is yet to match the German defender’s demands.
The Blues have been linked to several defenders, including Niklas Sule. Jules Kounde and Attila Szalai are two defenders that have caught Chelsea’s eye. Chelsea made a bid for Kounde last summer but failed in their bid for the Frenchman. Chelsea will again test the resolve of Sevilla for Kounde in the summer.
If Chelsea can secure Sule, they will save millions in the market as they prepare to lose a few defenders to free transfers.
