The best coaches are in the top clubs. Manchester United are perhaps the exception, as they have kept faith with a rookie whose biggest highlight is a title win with Molde in Norway.
The biggest clubs want to win big titles and dole out the cash to attract the best players and the best managers around.
It is the dilemma that Newcastle finds itself in as their hunt for a manager that can take them to El Dorado continues. Following the sack of Steve Bruce, a few names have popped up to take up the mantle, but the club has made no concrete decisions.
Newcastle have the added challenge of hovering over the relegation zone, which is not the kind of assignment a top coach would relish, except you are Sam Allardyce.
Gerrard nominated for the Newcastle role
Newcastle are scouring the market in search of a new manager that will take over the vacant position left by the sacking of Steve Bruce. The club wants a manager that can take them where they can challenge for titles.
With the ambitious club looking to rub shoulders with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, they want a manager that will also fit the profile.
A few names have popped up, but a former Newcastle player feels the right man for the job is current Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.
Former Newcastle right-back Ryan Taylor has advocated for the club to get Steven Gerrard at the club.
With rumours rife that Frank Lampard has pulled out of the running for the Newcastle job, Taylor believes the job is tailor-made for Gerrard. As per bookmakers though, the chances of Gerrard landing this job is rather slim.
Some believe that Gerrard is still a rookie and might not need a high-pressure job at this stage of his coaching career. It is a lesson that Frank Lampard learned while at Chelsea and it is probably that is why the Chelsea legend has pulled out of the running.
Praise for Gerrard amid Newcastle Fonseca interest
With Graeme Jones currently leading the Geordies, Taylor has praised Steven Gerrard for his achievements and believes he can replicate his Rangers feat at Newcastle.
Taylor said he would love to see Gerrard in charge at Newcastle. He told Sky Sports, as cited by Football365, that Gerrard knows what passion is all about because he comes from the city.
According to him, Gerrard plays football the right way and knows who good players are. He also lauded Gerrard’s achievements praising him for doing an unbelievable job at Rangers.
Gerrard helped Rangers win its 55th Scottish league title in an unbeaten league campaign.
Former AS Roma boss Paulo Fonseca has also been linked with the Newcastle job. According to Fabrizio Romano, the out-of-work Portuguese is willing to accept the job at St James’ Park. Romano also confirmed on his YouTube channel that discussions are ongoing with Fonseca.
