The world's attention has been on the transfer saga that was going on between Real Madrid and PSG over Kylian Mbappe.
Real Madrid president wanted to make a statement signing this summer, and with Mbappe refusing to sign a contract renewal, the 22-year-old was a prime target. However, Mauricio Pochettino still believes the Frenchman will stay put at PSG this summer.
Eduardo Camavinga was nowhere in the picture while the saga ensued, and Real Madrid pursued their man with vigour, knowing the odds were in their favour. Late on Monday, Real Madrid were rumoured to have pulled out of negotiations with PSG over the signature of the World Cup winner only to shock the world with the announcement of Camavinga in the offing.
Real Madrid complete midfielder quest
Real Madrid have made a steal in the capture of Eduardo Camavinga. With the madness surrounding the transfer window this summer, the player had gone under the radar. Manchester United, who needed his quality, let themselves be consumed by the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Transfermarkt valued the player at €55 million, but Real Madrid were able to negotiate a deal for €30 million (£27 million) plus add-ons. The player had a year left to run on his contract, and rather than lose him for free, Rennes have decided to accept their offer.
According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Camavinga's medical was completed on Monday evening, forcing United to look elsewhere for a midfielder.
Rennes' boss had insisted the player's future would one way or the other be resolved this summer. A contract extension or an outright sale was mooted, with the club choosing the latter.
Manchester United still in need of a midfielder
Manchester United, to please their manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is reportedly still in a rebuilding process, opened the cash register. They have been on a spending binge this summer. With each player signed, United always seemed to be short in another area.
Many United fans have clamoured for a quality midfielder, with the feeling that Scott McTominay and Fred will not cut it in their quest for a title this season.
The team had been in for Camavinga. With the cost involved, money would not have been an object for United. Camavinga has chosen Real Madrid over Manchester United.
Camavinga rose through the ranks at Rennes. In 2019, At 16, he broke into the Rennes senior team and has gone on to feature for Les Bleus, making him the youngest player at 17 years, nine months, and 29 days old, to do so since Maurice Gastinger in 1914.
