While the football world still tries to wrap their heads around quick events that saw Messi depart Barcelona, moves are already being made regarding his next destination. All of this comes after Barcelona claimed they were confident of agreeing on an extension.
For a player of the Argentine’s calibre, only a few clubs are capable of signing him, even as a free agent. Manchester City would have come as the perfect destination given the player’s relationship with Pep Guardiola. However, their transfer activity already hints such a move could take a major dent in their finances, despite their affluence.
On the other hand, PSG are the other side that can realistically make a move to sign Messi. They have made a number of free transfers so far but the biggest one could be yet to come. Messi being a free agent means they will only have to offer him astronomical wages and possibly a sign-on fee. With all of that in mind, it is no surprise to see that PSG are already making concrete moves to sign the Argentine.
PSG want to reunite Messi and Neymar
Not long after the news that Messi would leave Barcelona resurfaced, talks about his futured to emerge. In line with what was earlier mentioned, Manchester City were quick to dismiss themselves from such a move but it was not the same for PSG.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano already confirmed that PSG were exploring thea of signing the ‘free-agent’ after seeing the latest development with Barcelona. The French giants are eager to show some intent as they not only plan to bring Messi but to keep their star players Mbappé and Neymar in alongside the Argentine.
If this move should materialize, it would see Messi and Neymar reunite after they formed such a close relationship during their time together at Barcelona.
In the same vein, another report from The Athletic even claimed that Messi has already reached out to PSG boss and his compatriot in Mauricio Pochettino regarding a possible move.
Good move for all parties involved, except Barcelona
Messi joining PSG would come as a good move for the player and club. Barcelona can count themselves as the losers in this case.
Despite his age, PSG will still be getting a rare talented player that can still perform for another two to three seasons. Messi could also be the final jigsaw in their puzzle to win the Champions League. The French giants have severally expressed their intent to sign Messi and they could finally get a chance to do so now.
In addition to the above, Messi would be moving to an environment with lots of friends and familiarity. Asides from Neymar, he will also reunite with international teammates Angel di Maria and Leandro Paredes. It gets better, considering Mauricio Pochettino is Argentine as well.
Just three days ago, Neymar shared a picture with two other PSG stars alongside Messi on holiday. Could that be a clue of what is to come? We’ll have to wait and see.
