With dwindling fortunes on the pitch, Manchester United are about to reach for the chequebook again. The Red Devils were busy during the summer as they brought in several players to bolster the squad. Despite the additions, United have been unable to get the desired results as they start another rebuild.

The rebuild under interim manager Ralf Rangnick saw the strangest January transfer window at the club. Anthony Martial joined Sevilla on loan while Donny van de Beek did the same with Everton.. Mason Greenwood is out of commission battling rape and assault charges.

The Red Devils want to make things count in the summer and are looking to make a few acquisitions to put the team in better stead.

United target Leicester City midfielder

Despite the massive outlay made in the summer by Manchester United in the acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, the team has not fared any better.

There is improvement in the club, albeit minimal, with the midfield and the defending of Harry Maguire a headache for the German gaffer. Manchester United will make a foray into the transfer market in the summer to beef up its midfield.

As per the Daily Star, Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans has emerged as a summer target of Manchester United. United remain confident they can land the Belgian defender amid the woes of the Foxes this season. United believe the midfielder could arrive at Old Trafford for £40 million.

With a midfielder high on their list, Tielemans could prove a solution for United in their quest for a world-class midfielder. Manchester United had a squad screaming for a quality midfielder last season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ignored this and opted for a non-footballing decision to sign Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho for £73 million.

Poor decisions by United

The decision not to sign a quality midfielder is haunting United this season. Scott McTominay has been adequate, but not at the level Manchester United needs. With United nowhere close to being in the title race and in a battle to make the top four, the club seeks to make amends in the summer.

Elsewhere, United also have West Ham midfielder Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United on their radar.

West Ham value Declan Rice at £100 million, but United deem the figure a little pricey. Phillips is poised to sign a new contract at Leeds United, which puts the Red Devils in a quandary. Phillips has also made it clear he has no intention of joining Manchester United. It means that United now turn their focus to Leicester's Tielemans.

Tielemans has a contract that runs till the summer of 2023. The Belgian is also a target for Juventus and is desperate to play in the UEFA Champions League.

United have a good relationship with Leicester City after they were arm-twisted into paying £80 million for Harry Maguire. He is yet to justify that outlay on him. A fee of around £40 million could be enough to sign Youri Tielemans.
