Real Madrid have been through a spate of injuries that is yet to abate, with several players on the treatment table. The 13-time Champions League winners find themselves in a spot of bother as injury has become a recurring theme.
This season, Los Blancos have been hit hard in the defence with Marcelo, Ferland Mendy and Dani Carvajal all out. They have had to make do with a makeshift defence, with Nacho Fernandez filling in at either right-back or left-back. On other occasions, academy player Miguel Gutierrez has also filled the position of left-back. It comes after a summer where they lost Varane and Ramos to Manchester United and PSG, respectively.
The team is looking for a more permanent solution instead of using personnel not suited for those positions. With Carvajal shorn of an able deputy and the Spaniard battling with a reoccurring injury, Los Merengues has decided to step into the market again to sort the situation.
Aurier an option for Real Madrid
Carlo Ancelotti returned to Real Madrid this summer and has gotten his team firing on all cylinders despite the unavailability of several key players. The Italian is particularly bothered about his right-back position, where Daniel Carvajal succumbed to another injury against Valencia earlier in September.
Without a deputy, centre-back Nacho and midfielder Fede Valverde have had to fill in at that position. According to reports emanating from Spain, Los Merengues are interested in signing Serge Aurier. The Ivory Coast international is a free agent as his contract at Spurs was terminated on deadline day by mutual consent.
Following the failure to land buyers for the 28-year-old, the North London club decided to let him go with a year to go on his contract.
Spurs, who have remained in the doldrums of English football, following many years of not winning a trophy, believed that Aurier did not offer the quality that their ambitions desired.
Sky Sports reports that Real Betis, Watford, Genoa and Spartak Moscow were interested in taking the Ivorian but were shunned by a player who wanted to play for a ‘bigger’ club.
Is Aurier a good fit for Real Madrid?
Ancelotti is keen on bringing in a specialist, and with limited funds, Aurier fits the bill for Los Blancos. The Spanish club loaned out Alvaro Odriozola to Fiorentina, and Lucas Vazquez has also played in that position, but neither were convincing.
Spanish talk show El Chiringuito also reports that Ancelotti sees the former PSG defender as a fit for the team.
Aurier is available and would not attract a transfer fee. He also has plenty of experience, which the Italian sees as a valuable resource.
Aurier’s experience
Aurier, who previously turned out for Lens, Toulouse and Paris Saint-Germain all in France, made 110 appearances for Spurs scoring eight goals.
Aurier has 70 international caps for Ivory Coast and was close to joining Barcelona in a deal that took Emerson Royal to Spurs. Aurier was moved on alongside Sissoko, Lamela, Danny Rose and Toby Alderweireld.
