Liverpool are one of several clubs reported to be interested in signing Youri Tielemans from Leicester City. The midfielder was impressive for the Foxes last season and scored one of the goals of the season when he fired a 30-yard screamer in the FA Cup Final against Chelsea. Leicester won that game 1-0, and in the end, it was Tielemans' goal that decided the final.
The Reds have always been credited with an interest in the young Belgian but upped the ante on their efforts to sign him after it became evident that Georginio Wijnaldum was leaving this summer.
However, according to recent reports, Liverpool will face some competition for Tielemans' signature as there are other clubs, such as Manchester United and a top Spanish club, who are also interested in signing the former Monaco star.
Asking Price Too High
According to football journalist Daniel Nielson, though, Youri Tielemans would prefer to join Liverpool. Nielson says that personal terms between Liverpool and the player are "not expected to be a problem", but that the transfer fee that Leicester City are asking for is too steep for the Reds at the moment.
Nielson thinks that Liverpool are prepared to negotiate a lower deal for the player and that they will also look into selling some fringe players to fund the Tielemans transfer. Nielson once again says that Tielemans would be very happy to join Liverpool and that personal terms won't be an issue.
Looking for a New Challenge
Liverpool will lose Georginio Wijnaldum at the end of June as he will become a free agent, so they have been making contingency plans to replace him for some time now. They see Tielemans as theal replacement for the Dutchman and will push for a deal for the young Belgian that looks to have a very bright future ahead of him.
People close to Tielemans have said that even though he was very happy with what he had achieved with Leicester, he wanted to move clubs during the summer. Belgian football journalist Sven Claes said in a recent interview that after Youri finished playing at the Euros, he would leave Leicester.
The journalist and Belgian football insider added that Tielemans was ready for a new challenge and that clubs like Manchester United and a top Spanish club were already interested in him.
That means the Reds will definitely have competition for Tielemans and might even be involved in a bidding war for the Belgian. However, to prevent this from happening, Liverpool are doing their best not to put all their eggs in one basket. The former Anderlecht and Monaco man is not the Reds' only midfield target. They have also been linked with other midfielders including Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez and Brighton's Yves Bissouma, who was also impressive last season.
