Wesley Fofana will play no part in Leicester City’s 2021/22 season campaign due to suffering a nasty injury.
Less than a week to the start of the 2021/22 season, Leicester have suddenly found themselves short of cover at the back after the injury to Wesley Fofana. The youngster’s injury has forced Brendan Rodgers to make a foray into the transfer market for replacement before the season kicks off.
Fofana deals Leicester a colossal blow
Wesley Fofana was such a massive influence on the Leicester defence and their challenge for a top-four place last season. By February 2021, Leicester City had an injury crisis with Wesley Fofana, James Justin, and Jonny Evans injured. That crisis derailed Leicester City’s chances of keeping their place in the top-four.
Up till his injury, Fofana was brilliant in defence for the Foxes, and Rodgers was counting on him for the new season.
The gaffer’s plans have altered after Fofana picked up an injury in a friendly against Villarreal that will keep him out of action till 2022.
Vestergaard to fill the gap?
As a result of Fofana’s injury, Brendan Rodgers has been forced to look into the transfer market for an adequate replacement. Time is not Rodger’s ally at the moment, with the season just around the corner. On short notice, there are not many suitable options in the market.
Rodgers has been a fan of Vestergaard and had tried to bring him to the King Power stadium about a year ago. The time may be appropriate for Leicester. They can get Vestergaard now as the 29-year-old 6ft 6inches tall defender is out of contract in the summer.
talkSPORT claim that the FA cup holders would need to cough out between £15-20 million for the defender. The Foxes have already signed Ryan Bertrand this summer and will now need to bring in another defensive cover.
Saints find themselves in a dilemma
It’s looking a bit dour at St. Mary’s with the Saints having lost Danny Ings to Southampton, and while they’re still looking to replace the striker, they totter on the edge of losing Vestergaard.
The Saints have to sell or risk losing him on a free. They also have to find a replacement for Vestergaard before allowing him to leave in the summer.
Foxes face challenge from West Ham
Leicester have to move quickly as they’re not the only side interested in the Danish international. West Ham was linked with the player after their failed attempt for Kurt Zouma.
The Telegraph reports that David Moyes hadntified the Dane as an alternative to Kurt Zouma, who rejected a move to the Hammers. The Foxes will now have to move quickly to get their man.
Meanwhile, Fofana will undergo surgery for his fractured fibula.
