The midfielder wants his salary bumped up considerably to remain at Inter.
It has become a common trend amongst players to run their contracts to the edge of expiration before renewal talks begin. It gives them plenty of power during negotiations. The number of players that fall within this category increases by the day.
The clearest example is Kylian Mbappe, who has Paris Saint-Germain boxed into a corner as they try everything they can to convince the 23-year-old to remain with the Paris club. When the winter transfer window opens on January 1, Mbappe will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with any club.
Inter Milan find themselves in a tight spot, as one of their vital players has refused to sign the latest offer before him. It has irked the Italian champions so much that they have set a deadline for the player.
Inter Milan want to tie Brozovic to a new contract
The 2021/22 Serie A season is going beautifully for the defending champions Inter Milan. They sit top of the table with everything going to script for the Nerazzurri. A little spanner has been thrown into their works and has unsettled the Italian champions.
Inter are keen to tie Marcelo Brozovic to a new deal, but the midfielder seems to be playing games with the club. Inter have become fed up with the games setting a deadline for the player, as he rejected their latest offer.
Brozovic, 29, has become one of coach Simone Inzaghi’s most important players and the Italian coach wants the Croatian midfielder at the club for longer. Inter Milan want to renew his contract, which expires in June 2022. Brozovic has been a core part of the Nerazzurri success endearing himself to the fans. The battle to keep him at the club beyond this season is on.
It’s a money problem
La Gazzetta dello Sport cited by Football Italia report that the problem with the renewal comes down to the numbers. Inter Milan have offered less than what Brozovic has demanded. According to the report, Inter offered the Croatian €5.5 million net per season plus add-ons. The latest offer is an increase of around €1.5 million compared to his current salary.
Brozovic is angling for €7 million net per season, and despite the substantial increase to his salary, he remains unconvinced and has politely declined the offer. The Croatian midfielder is happy to stay in Milan. Inter are running against time to keep Brozovic, with Premier League club Newcastle more than willing to meet his wage demands.
The Nerazzurri want to tie the midfielder to a new deal within the next 30 days. According to reports, Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio are not ready to go into a money battle with Brozovic, who can sign a pre-contract with a new club next month.
