A few weeks ago, Antonio Conte declared that Tottenham Hotspurs needed a makeover as the squad did not have the required quality to challenge for titles. The Italian expressed his frustrations after the north London club crashed out of the EFL Cup, in a 3-0 loss to Chelsea over two legs.

Conte was singing from the same song sheet as Jose Mourinho, who voiced the same concerns while at the club. Conte, known for leaving clubs if he doesn’t get what he wants, has backed Daniel Levy into a corner.

One of the changes demanded by Conte was that the club retains Hugo Lloris. The gaffer was worried about losing such an experienced goalkeeper, who was in the final six months of his contract.

Lloris renews contract

There were doubts over Hugo Lloris’ future at Tottenham. The French World Cup-winning goalkeeper was into the final six months of his contract, and it looked like he was going to leave the club in the summer.

In a twist to one of the top trending transfer news, the goalkeeper has committed his future to the North London club as he signed a new two-year contract that will expire in 2024. The 35-year-old has been a loyal servant of the club, having served through thick and thin. According to BBC, Antonio Conte played a vital role in convincing the club to renew his contract and for the goalkeeper to accept the offer.

Lloris has been at the club since 2012, and his new contract will see him remain at the club for 12 years.

A barren spell at Spurs

Hugo Lloris joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 from Lyon. The experienced goalkeeper has featured consistently for the North London club since his arrival. He has made 395 appearances in all competitions. Despite his loyalty and top performance with Spurs, he is yet to win any trophy with the club.

Lloris has been more successful with the French national team, where he won the World Cup in 2018. The closest he has come to winning a medal with Tottenham is in the Carabao Cup in 2021 and the 2019 Champions League. On both occasions, he finished as runner-up.

Conte speaks on Lloris

Conte had expressed confidence earlier in the month about the goalkeeper remaining at the club beyond the season. Conte said that discussions were underway when asked about the goalkeeper’s situation. He praised Lloris, saying he is a top goalkeeper with loads of experience. He also said he wanted him at the club.

According to Conte, Lloris knows the club very well, and he loves the shirt and the badge. Conte believes he is a vital player to the club and was sure a solution would be found. He never wavered in his belief that the French goalkeeper would be around for long.
