Chelsea have a massive problem on their hands, and a solution is not close. The Blues have several of their senior defenders on the last legs of their contracts, and the Stamford Bridge side outfit are having a tough time getting the players to sign a new contract. Getting replacements for the defenders has also proved an arduous task.
Only Manchester City (14) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (16) have conceded fewer goals than Chelsea (18) this season. It is the fulcrum of Thomas Tuchel’s team as they continue their chase for the Premier League title. As things stand, Chelsea may be in the market this summer for two or three defenders.
Tuchel is looking to bring in defensive reinforcements ahead of next season. As per Spanish publication AS, the German has set his sights on Real Madrid defender Eder Militao. Whether the Brazilian would be willing to swap the Spanish capital for London is a different ball game entirely.
Tuchel asks for Militao
Eder Miltao has seen his stocks rise in recent months. From being a high-risk option for Los Merengues, Militao has become pivotal for the Spanish giants as he has put in fantastic displays this season.
The performance of the Brazilian has not gone unnoticed. Thomas Tuchel has set his sights on the centre-back. The German tactician hopes to convince the Brazilian to switch to Chelsea next season. Snatching Militao from Real Madrid will not be a walk in the park as the Brazilian defender has three and a half years left on his contract, and Los Blancos are keen to start negotiations with him for an extension.
The might of Real Madrid does not bother Tuchel, who has asked the Chelsea hierarchy to make Militao a priority in the next transfer window.
Why Tuchel is desperate for Militao
Chelsea have as many as three defenders who will be out of contract at the end of the season. Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen will be free agents. Coincidentally, Rudiger has also been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid. With the club making no headway in getting them to commit to a renewal, Tuchel is desperate for replacements. The German has lined up potential replacements as he looks at the club's medium and long-term plans.
One player that has caught his fancy is Eder Militao. The Brazilian has impressed at Real Madrid this season. The injuries to Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos last season allowed Militao to shine, and he took it. Militao’s performance is the reason Florentino Perez was confident enough to let the defensive pairing of Ramos and Varane leave the club.
The Brazilian has formed a strong partnership with David Alaba. The performance of Militao and Alaba has been pivotal to the impressive season that Los Blancos are enjoying this season. The Spanish giants sit top of La Liga Santander with four points ahead of second-placed Sevilla.
Militao joined Real Madrid from Porto in 2019 for £41 million. At £2.5 million a year, Militao is one of the lowest earners at Real Madrid. Should Chelsea fail to land the Brazilian, they could return for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, who came close to joining the club last summer.
