Cavani emerges as Real Madrid's transfer alternative to Haaland

Edinson Cavani has emerged as an option for the La Liga giants if they fail to land Haaland.

Real Madrid have all but won La Liga Santander this season. Los Blancos went within seven points of the title thanks to a hard-fought win over Sevilla on Sunday and Barcelona’s loss to Cadiz on Monday. Real Madrid can now give full attention to their tie against Manchester City next week.

The soon to be crowned champions are looking beyond the next couple of matches as they prepare for the next season. It is no secret that Madrid are in hot pursuit of Kylian Mbappe, who they want to make their marquee signing for the summer. Real Madrid are the current favourites by top bookmakers to sign the mercurial youngster this summer.

Asides from the Frenchman, Real Madrid also have other targets in mind. Erling Haaland is the other player that appeals to Real Madrid, but the cost of acquiring the player’s services is inhibiting.

Los Blancos are already behind Manchester City in the pursuit of the Norwegian, but the Spanish side are not relenting. Los Blancos, however, have otheras and might look to a ‘plan B’ as they seek a backup striker for Karim Benzema. Reports suggest that the La Liga outfit are interested in signing Edinson Cavani in the summer.

Cavani could come as a much cheaper alternative

Many Real Madrid fans would be shocked at the news of the potential arrival of Edinson Cavani to the capital in the summer. The fans are accustomed to seeing top stars ply their trade at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

According to Fichajes as cited by Sport Witness, Ancelotti has made the Uruguayan striker his ‘plan B’ if Real Madrid fails to land Erling Haaland.

Karim Benzema has been excellent this season and is on course for the Ballon d’Or. However, Real Madrid know they need another striker to share the goal-scoring load with the Frenchman. The only other source for Los Blancos has been Vinicius Junior, whose goals have dried up in recent months.

According to reports, Carlo Ancelotti has sanctioned the signing of the Manchester United striker. Cavani would be a cheap option for Los Blancos as he would be out of contract in the summer. It has been slim pickings for Real Madrid as strikers of note cost money, and Real Madrid are not as buoyant as they used to be.

If Real Madrid miraculously pulls off a deal for Erling Haaland, they would not need to sign Cavani.

Poor form and injuries

With the season Cavani has had at Manchester United, it is a bit ludicrous that Real Madrid have him in their plans. With Karim Benzema (34) currently leading the line for Los Blancos, it makes little sense to add an injury-prone 35-year-old to the ranks.

It has been a struggle for the Uruguayan this season, as Injuries limited his performance and appearances for the Red Devils. After a successful first year at Old Trafford, he signed a one-year extension that keeps him at the club till the summer.

Cavani scored 17 goals in the 2020/21 season but has only managed two goals this term in 17 appearances across all competitions. The Uruguayan is among several players that would leave Manchester United in the summer. Others are Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata.
