Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour is reportedly closing in on a season-long loan move to Norwich.
The 20-year old Chelsea midfielder is hungry for playtime, and Norwich might be the place for him to satisfy that hunger. Gilmour made 11 appearances for Chelsea last season as a result of the fierce competition for places in the club’s midfield. Chelsea is also said to be open to the prospect of sending Gilmour on loan.
According to The Guardian, Billy Gilmour has agreed to join Norwich for the 2021-22 season and will undergo a medical later this week when his quarantine ends.
The 20-year old Scottish international tested positive for COVID-19 while on international duty and was absent when they crashed out of the tournament in their final game. Gilmour will be coming out of isolation on Wednesday and will be expected to undergo his medicals.
Gilmour’s Chelsea Meteoric Rise
Gilmour made his debut in the 2019-20 season under Frank Lampard. He announced himself on the big stage with a man-of-the-match performance against Liverpool in the 2019-20 FA cup quarter final. Just when the youngster was finding his feet, he picked up a knee injury that ended his season.
Gilmour’s series of performances in a very short period in his career has won him an admirer in Graeme Souness. Souness believes if Gilmour stays and fights for his shirt, he would be challenging Jorginho for ang place.
“I’d personally keep him at Chelsea. I think Jorginho has to be looking over his shoulder. He’ll be challenging him more than anyone else”, Suness told Skysports.
Billy Gilmour was named Star of the Match for his performance in Scotland’s game against England at the ongoing EURO 2020.
According to reports, other Premier League teams are said to be interested in signing Gilmour on loan. However, Norwich is now bookmakers' favourite to sign the Scot.
Norwich won the championship last season and will be playing in the Premier League next season. He has already signed goalkeeper Angus Gunn and Kosovo winger Milot Rashica as they prepare for their return to the Premier League. The Canaries are also set to lose their right-back, Max Aarons, to Tottenham Hotspur.
