According to Le10Sport, Barcelona is reportedly eyeing a move for Lille youngster Renato Sanchez.
Sanchez, 23, was said to have caught the eyes of the Barcelona hierarchy with his brilliant display for the Portuguese national team in the just concluded Euro 2020 tournament.
The 23-year-old Portuguese was very instrumental for Lille as they shockingly won the Ligue 1 title last season at the expense of the mighty Paris Saint-German.
Sanchez introduced himself to the footballing world with a series of eye-catching displays in the Euro 2016 tournament. His performance at Euro 2016 earned him the Golden Boy award for that year, and he moved to Bayern Munich. Sanchez, however, struggled to replicate his Euro 2016 form at Bayern and was subsequently loaned to Swansea FC, where he also struggled.
Sanchez found a new lease of life when he made a permanent switch from Bayern Munich to Lille, where he was able to rebuild his career.
Financial problems and Liverpool interest could cost Barcelona Sanchez
Lille is said to be eager to cash out on its star man and will demand a hefty price from potential buyers. With Barcelona’s recent financial woes, the club might miss out on Renato Sanchez just as it missed out on Wijnaldum.
The Catalan club, which recently agreed a substantial two-year wage package with their star man Lionel Messi, would need to sell some of its players to be able to fund the move.
The Catalan club is also reportedly in a tight spot after exceeding Laliga’s salary limit by 40%. Barcelona’s limit was £296m (€347m) last year, and now it’s £136m (€160m). In light of this fact, Barcelona might not be able to add Sanchez to its wage bill.
Barcelona is also not alone in its interest for the 23-year-old. As reported here on betpack, Liverpool is looking to strengthen their midfield after the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum, and Klopp considers Sanchez a massive replacement for the Dutch midfielder.
In light of Barcelona’s financial problem, a battle with Liverpool to sign the midfielder would be futile.
Of the two clubs, the Anfield Landlords are bookmakers’ favorite to sign Sancez.
