For Tottenham to compete with the elite of the Premier League, they need players with elite mentalities. The shenanigans that saw the ouster of Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo is still at the club with several players not pulling their weight.

Steven Bergwijn is a player whose future at the clubs remains cloudy as Antonio Conte has only said two words to him. Amid the non-communication between him and his manager, Ajax has shown an interest in the player.

The problem at Tottenham

Jose Mourinho received blame for the malaise at Tottenham. The accusation against the Portuguese manager was that he did not get the best out of the players and that they were better than their current display. Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele were on the end of rebuke by the manager for their lack of effort and lacklustre performances.

No one agreed with Jose Mourinho that the Spurs players were not up to scratch, and the Portuguese was sacked five days before the Carabao Cup final.

The arrival of Nuno Espirito Santo did little to change the fortunes of Spurs as the team went on a downward slide. The tactical nous of Nuno Espirito Santo was overwhelmed by the rot in the squad. Like Mourinho, Nuno was relieved of his duties.

Former Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte is not satisfied with his squad and has asked for January reinforcements despite the outlay made by the club in the summer. Steven Bergwijn looks like one of the players to leave the club soon.

Bergwijn attracts interest from Ajax

Antonio has not taken long to discover the deadwood in his squad and is willing to start weeding them out. The initial complaint by former manager Jose Mourinho is still present in the team and acknowledged by the Italian gaffer.

Recently the gaffer said that the situation at Spurs was not a simple one and that the Tottenham job is his biggest challenge.

The Italian wants to refresh the squad and is ready to ship out some players. One of the players not in his good graces is Steven Bergwijn.

Bergwijn has found game time hard to come by under the new manager, who is not so keen on the Dutchman. The player’s situation has piqued the interest of Ajax, who reportedly declared their interest in bringing the former PSV Eindhoven player to the Johan Cruyff Arena in a January loan deal.

Bergwijn cost Tottenham £26.7million to prise him away from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020. Communication between the player and coach has not been more than two words said by the manager as he does not want the player in his squad.

It has given Ajax the confidence that they could land the player.

According to Dutch football reporter Mike Vermeij Conte doesn’t see what he wants in the player. He also reminded everyone that it was Conte that blocked a transfer from PSV to Inter Milan.
